GFSC welcomes new Board Members

19 May 20

The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) is pleased to announce the appointments of Mr Stephen Haddrill and Mr Paul Smee to its Board.

Appointed by the Minister for Digital and Financial Services, Mr Haddrill will join the Board in September 2020 with Mr Smee joining the Board in October 2020, succeeding Mr Adrian Coles and Dr Jonathan Spencer respectively.

Mr Haddrill was the Chief Executive Officer of the UK Financial Reporting Council for ten years before retiring from the position in October 2019, bringing in measures such as the strengthening of regulatory oversight of the audit and actuarial professions. Mr Haddrill also served as Director General of the Association of British Insurers for almost five years and was recently appointed Director General of the Finance and Leasing Association, the UK trade body for consumer credit and motor and asset finance providers.

Mr Smee has had a diverse career in finance sector trade bodies, having served as Director General of the Association of Independent Financial Advisors, Chief Executive Officer of the UK Payments Council and more recently, Director General of the Mortgage Lenders up until its merger into UK Finance in 2017. He currently holds a number of non-executive director roles.

Mr Haddrill said “I am honoured to be appointed to the GFSC’s Board and look forward to working hard to deliver the GFSC’s remit and objectives and serving in the best interests of Gibraltar. I’d like to thank Minister Isola for offering me this exciting opportunity.”

Mr Smee added “I am hugely grateful to Minister Isola for the opportunity to serve on the Board of the GFSC and I’m keen to take up my position, providing both challenge and support to drive the Commission forward.”

Commission Chairman, Dr. Jonathan Spencer, said: “The GFSC is extremely fortunate to welcome both Mr Haddrill and Mr Smee to the Board. They both bring a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience that will be hugely beneficial to GFSC and the jurisdiction.”
